There are many factors that may influence the size and space required in a lung function department. These include type of hospital (e.g. District General Hospital, tertiary centre), patient throughput and range of services offered. Working group 1 will address some of these issues.
This document will aim to make recommendations on what space is required for a lung function department to provide a professional and efficient service. We will take into account environmental and health & safety issues. This document is of particular importance with current government plans to build many new hospitals under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) Scheme where staff are increasingly involved in the planning and design of their lung function laboratories.
