Practical Examination

Only those undertaking the foundation or full level of the certificate of competence will have a practical exam. The practical examination will take place at locations throughout the UK.

When you apply for the certificate of competence, you will be able to nominate a practical examination date and location. Your practical examination can be taken at any time during your portfolio completion time, but must be completed within the 6 months of applying to the certification process.

The examination is expected to last approximately 20 minutes.

You will use the equipment that is available at the centre and can arrive early to the examination to give you time to be familiar with the equipment. You will not be tested on how well you can use the equipment during the examination, but on the performance of spirometry. You will be able to ask for help regarding the equipment if needed.

The practical examination will consist of:

  • Preparation of work area
  • Calibration of the equipment
  • Testing of a patient including:
    • pre test questions
    • contraindications
    • height/weight measurement
    • performance of relaxed VC
    • performance of FVC

Full information about the practical examination will be sent to you once you book into one of the available examination sessions.
